The Hornets Mixed Ability Team Grant

Last week, as one of the Wright Hassall Charitable Trust Trustees, I was lucky enough to be invited along with my colleague, Neal Patterson to attend a sponsors evening at the Old Leamingtonians Rugby Club to watch (and in Neal’s case participate with) the Hornets Mixed Ability Team train and play a match. Neal is heavily involved in The Wooden Spoon Society, The Children’s Charity of Rugby, and came across the Hornets at The Wooden Spoon Tag Fest back in June where they were participating with other mixed ability teams across the UK and Ireland. The Hornets Mixed Ability Team was set up 6 years ago in recognition of a lack of opportunity for players with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), to play rugby within a community rugby team setting. Alongside players with SEND, within the team there are also players who have played rugby at international level (ladies Irish team), club rugby at Old Leamingtonians – players from Men’s team, Vets team, Walking rugby, ladies team, girls team, junior players and colts players. Parents and siblings have also joined the team. The Hornets have developed into a rugby community, as a team they are mutually supportive of each other, hold each other in high regard and enjoy playing together as a team. It was wonderful to see the players interacting with each other, having fun while exercising. I had the opportunity to chat to some of the players parents during the training session, and it was clear that the Hornets is a big part of the players lives, has helped them grow in confidence and find their place in the team. Chatting to some of the players after the match only reconfirmed this and shows what a fantastic team the Hornets are! As Neal is a rugby addict and owing to the Leamington connection, Neal reached out to the Hornets to see if Wright Hassall could assist them. The Hornets play outside most of the year, but train indoors from January to March to ensure that they can reliably and consistently play. The Wright Hassall Charitable Trust has provided the Hornets with a grant of £600.00 to pay for the sports hall from January 2025. Sarah Cottey November 2024

Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance

The Wright Hassall Charitable Trust (WHCT) has recently made a donation of £500 to the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance who are funded entirely by donations. In 2023, they helped 1592 people across our area. Our donation is towards the operational costs of the Air Ambulance and will fund a wide range of medical equipment including Arrow T-POD pelvic stabilisation binders, Spider Strap System for patient immobiliser straps, blizzard AMB trauma blankets (to wrap around patients who may become hypothermic) and traction splints (applied to patients that have broken their thigh bone).

Cats Protection League

The Wright Hassall Charitable Trust (WHCT) has made a donation of £250 to the Cats Protection League who have had a longstanding relationship with the Trust and are the UK’s leading cat welfare charity. The League helps to educate cat owners, rescue abandoned cats and even offers Cats Protection Lifeline, a free, confidential cat fostering service to help support families flee to safety. With growing demand across all their services, and abandonment over 30% higher than last year, there are more cats needing their help than ever before and our donation will help make life better for both cats and people.

The Wright Hassall Charitable Trust

The Charitable Trust was first launched over ten years ago. We have a longstanding commitment to the community which is strengthened by the work we do with the charitable trust.

Thanks to this position we are uniquely placed to offer help to local charities that may not get the same type of exposure as the larger national and international charities or with which a member of our staff is closely involved.

The trustees are all members of the Wright Hassall family who want to make a difference and actively contribute to helping others.

Part of our mission, vision and values is to “Give back and make a difference as an honest and diverse business".

As one of the largest law firms in the Midlands we are conscious of our responsibilities not only to our team but also to the wider community of which we are very much a part of.

How do we raise money for the Trust?

We raise funds by holding various sponsored activities and events throughout the year.

Our regular fundraising events include:

Social Events

We work alongside the Wright Hassall Social Committee to raise funds for the Charitable Trust. The money raised through raffles and donations at our social events all go into the Charitable Trust account.

Swear Fees

All swear fees go to the Charitable Trust.

Raffles

Everyone loves a raffle! All money raised by selling tickets for our raffles throughout the year goes to the Trust. We hold raffles for various national days or events.

Staff Sponsorship and Donations

We encourage our employees to propose grants to charities that they are involved with personally, either as volunteers or through circumstance. We are always grateful for any staff donations.

Commitment to the local region

Our 174 year heritage means that we understand local business and their issues. We see the success of our business as being parallel to the success and development of the region. We take an active part in supporting the region and are proactive in our support of its growth and wellbeing. For example, we are members of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber, Coventry & Warwickshire Champions and Coventry First.
